Project Overview
The Memphis Innovation Corridor Project will link Downtown Memphis, the Memphis Medical District, and the University of Memphis with mConnect, the City's first Bus Rapid Transit system. Infrastructure improvements will make the corridor safer and more convenient for all users.

Transit Vision Network
The map shown above includes the Memphis Innovation Corridor overlaid with the proposed Transit Vision Network. The Memphis Innovation Corridor was included in the Transit Vision and provides important connections that benefit the entire network. The Transit Vision was adopted by the MATA Board of Directors in January 2019. The vision identifies short-term and long-term improvements for a comprehensive bus network. For more information about the Transit Vision Network, visit transitvision.memphistn.gov.
HISTORY
What did the Midtown Alternatives Analysis do?
Click on the image above to enlarge
The Memphis Innovation Corridor was identified as a potential high-capacity transit corridor in the MATA 2004 Midtown Alternatives Analysis, which examined transit needs and the potential for providing a higher quality transit service within Midtown Memphis and surrounding neighborhoods.
The information in the Midtown Alternatives Analysis was supplemented with additional engineering and design studies to determine the technical feasibility of the project. View the Alternatives Analysis fact sheet.
In 2017 and 2018, nearly 8,000 Memphians contributed to the Memphis 3.0 Transit Vision. The feedback they provided reinforced the importance of enhancing public transit in Memphis with reliable, high-frequency service options.
WHY BUS RAPID TRANSIT?
Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems like mConnect include special features that distinguish them from traditional bus routes.
Each design feature helps to increase service frequency, decrease the amount of time the BRT vehicles spend at stops, improve comfort and convenience, or protect the environment.

It is planned that multiple partners will provide funding for the Memphis Innovation Corridor project.
- In early November 2019, the US Department of Transportation awarded a $12 million BUILD Grant to the project for design and construction activities.
- MATA will apply for Federal Transit Administration discretionary funds to pay for about half of the project costs.
- The City of Memphis will fund about a quarter of the project costs through the Capital Improvements Program.
- State funds will cover the remaining 11 percent of the cost.
TIMELINE
Construction on the Memphis Innovation Corridor project is expected to begin in the summer of 2021, and mConnect is anticipated to open in 2024.
